Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate your love for the people around you, but it’s also full of controversies. People all have very different opinions and views on Valentine’s Day, some good, some bad. Here are some of my hot takes on Valentine’s Day!
- You have to ask your partner to be your Valentine. In my opinion, that is non-negotiable and should be a given. They shouldn’t have to ask you to do it or remind you what you should get. It doesn’t matter if you are dating or not, Valentine’s Day is supposed to make your partner feel special. It is another way to show your partner that you care for them and provide representations of your love. Many argue that you shouldn’t only buy gifts or celebrate your love one day a year but I think that is a weak argument.
- The meaning behind Valentine’s Day. I think the meaning behind Valentine’s Day has been misunderstood for years. It is often interpreted as the one day a year you should be celebrating love but specifically your partner. Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love overall. It is such a beautiful thing to watch bloom and develop into deep connections. It is a day to show you value meaningful connections in your life. You should be able to care for and validate your relationships year round. This is a day to celebrate love and the beginning of your journey with meaningful people in your life.
- Self-love during Valentine’s Day. Being single on Valentine’s Day is always avoided but I think it’s enjoyable. It is the perfect day to spend time alone and work on self-love. Being able to love and appreciate yourself is easily the most important form of love. With strong self-love comes strong relationships. If you can’t be happy and healthy alone then how can you be in a healthy relationship? Self-love can prevent becoming dependent on your partner when in a relationship. If you can’t thrive alone, you can’t thrive in a relationship.
- Celebrating platonic relationships. Valentine’s Day should be a day to celebrate your friendships as well. Those are some of the strongest and most important relationships in your life and it is important to acknowledge that. It could be just taking a simple 30 minutes to give a cute gift or a text. It is important to make sure you prioritize all your relationships even when in a romantic relationship.
