NCAA Sweet 16 Picks

John Cotton and Jarod Rodney

With more than a fair share of upsets in the first two rounds of the Tournament, John Cotton and Jarod Rodney sit down to discuss the best possible picks for the upcoming games on March 28 and March 29.

Florida (1) vs. UCLA (4)

John: Florida is the best all-around team in the tournament. UCLA has been playing well, but I don’t think they have enough firepower to beat Florida.

Jarod: Florida is the number one seed in the nation coming in, and after just shutting down a hot Pittsburgh basketball team, I don’t see them losing to UCLA.

Dayton (11) vs. Stanford (10)

John: Dayton has already beaten two top defensive teams so far (Ohio State and Syracuse), and I believe they can beat Stanford. Stanford just beat Kansas, but Kansas had been struggling a lot since the injury of Joel Embiid.

Jarod: Dayton, unknown by many, has pulled two huge upsets in the first two rounds, and I don’t see why they can’t again. Stanford also pulled an upset of New Mexico and Kansas, but I don’t seem them pulling this one out.

Virginia (1) vs. Michigan State (4)

John: These two teams are very evenly matched and play great offense and defense. I don’t think Virginia’s offense will be able to keep up with Michigan State in this matchup.

Jarod:  Michigan St., with the explosive offensive they have, will be able to take the lead and then sustain it throughout the game. After an impressive first two games, I think we see our second number one seed eliminated.

Iowa State (3) vs. Connecticut (7)

John:  Shabazz Napier has done it all for Connecticut so far through the tournament, but I think that run comes to an end in this matchup.  Iowa State’s combo of Deandre Kane and Melvin Ejim will be too much for Connecticut to handle.

Jarod: Connecticut, coming into the tournament, was almost not even picked to win their first game. But after the round of 32’s upset over Villanova, the Huskies look very good and are catching fire. Look for them to pull this upset.

Arizona (1) vs. San Diego State (4)

John: Some would argue Arizona is the second best team left in the tournament. They are another solid all around team, and I think San Diego State will have trouble in this matchup.

Jarod: Arizona, so far in the tournament, blew out their first two teams. Yes, they weren’t the hardest games in the world, but still they are red hot.

Baylor (6) vs. Wisconsin (2)

John: Baylor is playing as good as any team since the beginning of March and shut down the last two teams they’ve played. Baylor plays tough defense, and I think they match up well against Wisconsin’s shooters, which is why I think they will win.

Jarod: I have Wisconsin on this one. The badgers have been quietly sneaking their way into the Sweet 16. With two impressive wins, look for them to continue winning.

Kentucky (8) vs. Louisville (4)

John: Kentucky is coming off of their best game of the year against Wichita State. Louisville has struggled in their first two tournament games. March Madness is all about momentum, so I think Kentucky wins this game.

Jarod: I have Louisville on this one. The defending national champs are at it again. They have two big wins, and now that Wichita St. is out, look for them to hold on and advance.

Tennessee (11) vs. Michigan (2)

John: Michigan’s offense is scoring at will so far, and that’s why I think they will end Tennessee’s run in the tournament.

Jarod: I got Michigan on this one. With Duke out, the Wolverines have almost a free ride to the Elite eight.
