Halloween is a tradition practiced around the world and is, debatably, the best holiday. Because of its widespread popularity, there are hundreds of places to go in and around just Pittsburgh. Some common activities are trick or treating, haunted houses, and going to movies and parties. Here are just a few of the best places to go in and around Pittsburgh:
The first place that comes to my mind is Zombies of the Corn at Three Rivers Paintball, which has a haunted house, funhouse, and maze, food, scary stories, and a tractor ride with mounted paintball guns. The tractor ride is the main attraction, and it is generally good for all ages. The ride isn’t very scary on its own, but it is very fun. The haunted funhouse and maze are scary, but not too scary to not allow younger kids in. The haunted house is more aimed at teens and adults than the other houses. The scary stories are also a lot of fun, especially after having been through the ride and haunted houses.
Another very popular attraction is the Phantom Fall Fest at Kennywood. A lot of the bigger and more famous rides are open all night, like the Black Widow and the Phantom’s Revenge, but there are also some rides that close past 6pm so the park has more room for horror themed content, so make sure to get there early.
If Kennywood isn’t for you, Idlewild has a much less scary Halloween event aimed for younger audiences. The park has trick or treat trails, mascots, stories, redecorated rides, and a new spooky theme. They also have some new rides and walks that are different from the norm. Overall, the event is not very scary, but for people who have younger siblings and want to get them into the Halloween spirit, it’s a great choice.
A second great choice for younger siblings is the Rangos Giant Cinema in the Carnegie Science Center. The theater does showings of family-friendly horror films, like Coraline or Ghostbusters, on Saturdays. On the other hand, they also show R-rated horror movies like Alien or Final Destination on Fridays, so people of all ages can always find something to enjoy around Halloween.
Finally, if you want a great place to watch a whole bunch of different horror movies, the Row House Cinema in Lawrenceville does showings and marathons of classic horror films throughout October. They have listings ranging from kids movies like Hocus Pocus and Scooby Doo to slashers like Scream and Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. They also do showings of classic horror movies like The Evil Dead 1981 and Night of the Living Dead.
