The 2025 NFL Draft was one for the ages. This draft resulted in a blockbuster trade in the top five, a drastic fall to a potential superstar in this draft, and teams drastically getting better just because of one player. And of course, the Steelers did some surprisingly great moves in the draft as well.
We are going to start at the number one pick where the Tennessee Titans got their quarterback for the future in the number one ranked quarterback in this draft Cam Ward. Cam Ward has been given the keys to a pretty much dormant franchise and will hopefully bring them back to relevancy. Then, it came to the second pick in the draft.
The second pick was in the Cleveland Browns’ hands and they decided to trade the pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars in a pick swap where the Browns got the fifth pick in return. This move was a weird move for the Browns to do especially when they had a generational player in Travis Hunter right in arms reach and instead drafted someone who in my opinion is lacking enough skill for me not to name him. This started a very bad draft for Cleveland in my opinion especially with the other players that they drafted.
The main story that everyone was talking about from the draft is how far Shedeur Sanders (son of Deion Sanders) fell in the draft. Someone who was projected to be a top 5 pick just a couple weeks ago falling to the 5th round is just baffling to me. He ended up falling down to, ironically, the Cleveland Browns who now have a whopping 5 quarterbacks. Before the draft, they didn’t even have a starting caliber QB. After the draft, rumors came out that he was being too unprofessional at the NFL Combine. If you’re a prospect like Sanders who has a lot to prove, you don’t go walking in acting like you own the place. Just because your dad was one of the greats doesn’t mean that you are or ever will be as good as him. The Steelers dodged a bullet with Sanders and I hope that he can prove me and many others wrong.
Speaking of the Steelers, they didn’t do that bad in the draft. A lot of people wanted Sanders to come here but looking back on it now with hindsight in mind, the Browns can keep him. The Steelers drafted a ton of great players with their picks in this years draft including, Derrick Harmon (Defensive Tackle who they drafted with their first round pick), Kaleb Johnson (Running Back who they can have as a nice replacement for Najee Harris and the steal of the draft in my opinion), two Ohio State guys in Jack Sawyer and Will Howard (Edge and quarterback respectively who both just won a College National Championship) just to name a few. Overall for who the Steelers drafted, I think that this draft for them was one of the best drafts they had in years.
This draft provided many twists and turns unlike any NFL draft that we’ve ever seen. This draft also brought many teams’ futures bleak like the Browns and promising like the Jaguars and the Steelers. Hopefully next year’s NFL draft (which will happen here in Pittsburgh) will live up to the insanity and chaos that this draft caused.
