When we think of Valentine’s day we usually picture pink, hearts, relationships and other things that symbolize love. Celebrated on February 14th, Valentines Day has an interesting history and cultural significance that goes back many years.
The day is named after Saint Valentine, a priest who lived in Rome during the third century. At this time, Rome was controlled by Emperor Claudius who believed soldiers should remain single. One urban legend explains that he thought married men would be less effective on the battlefield. Saint Valentine officiated marriages between young people which led to his imprisonment and eventually his death. Another story states he was killed for helping christians escape from the harsh Roman prisons. He became a symbol of love and the sacrifices you are willing to make for it.
Over time, this holiday has evolved into the modernized version we celebrate today. During the 15th century, it was pretty common to exchange handwritten notes and small gifts to publicize your relationship with someone else. Eventually this turned into hanging out a Valentine’s card. These cards were often very elaborate and usually involved ribbon, bows, lace, and romantic sayings. By the 19th century, Valentine’s gifts were mass produced and could be bought almost anywhere. Esther A. Howland is often known as “Mother of the American Valentine”. She commercialized the idea of a Valentine’s day card and created the New England Valentine Company. Different countries have found unique ways to incorporate this holiday into their own traditions and cultures. In Japan, it is customary for women to give men gifts and a month later men will do the same. Couples in France plant trees and other plants to symbolize their growing love.
Recently, Valentine’s day has become a global celebration of endearment and affection. Modern day gifts typically include flowers, chocolates, jewelry, and romantic dinners. This love extends beyond romantic partners to include family, friends, and anyone you hold close to your heart. Valentine’s day is now a time to express your appreciation for others through traditional gifts or a simple act of kindness.
