Each year the senior and junior girls have the opportunity to participate in the powderpuff flag football game. It’s a fun event where the Friday night football games’ roles are reversed, boys being the cheerleaders and girls being the players. The game was on Wednesday November 20th, here’s the recap if you weren’t able to make it!
The game was an exciting one for sure. With the seniors having lost last year, the stakes were high. It was their last opportunity to secure the win and they did not disappoint with a 30-24 score. Each team had football players to help coach them in preparation for the game. They had multiple practices leading up to the game as well. Both teams had some great players and fun rival dynamics! Such as both Kate and Lily Hillegas participating and having some great runs earning more points for their teams and a sibling rivalry adding pressure but also excitement. In the first half, the seniors were down by two giving the juniors an advantage leading into the second half. The seniors were able to take the half to reevaluate and solidify a plan to take the win. Even with the weather conditions each team had a great game and really it came down to the wire. Congrats seniors for the win!
With the end of the game I asked some of the coaches to see how they felt about the game and anything they wanted to say to their team.
“As the offensive coordinator for these senior girls, I’m proud of them and the work they put in at practice. They did everything I asked of them, they got the job done and took home that win. We played the first half, took what the defense gave us and scored 16 in the first, down by 2. At halftime, we regrouped, schemed up a plan for the second half and executed that plan. We took home that win on a defensive stop on the 4th down. I’m proud of these girls and my coaching staff, can’t wait to play these juniors again in the spring!”- Jack Martin
“It was a super fun experience, and it was great to be able to coach a great group – Kelly McCarthy
