The scoreboard timer reaches zero. Second quarter has come to a close. It’s a break for the football team and even the student section, but not for the band. It’s half time! The North Hills’ Marching Band is performing a new halftime show titled, “Hey” Show.
The “Hey” Show includes songs such as: “Blitzkrieg Bop” by The Ramones, a solo featuring the drum major Olivia Miller (trumpet) where the band has a call and response to their solo. “Hey! Pachuco!” originally recorded by Royal Crown Revue, features a solo played by Liam Cunningham (trumpet), a Tuba feature including Hayden Hackimer, Elaina Seuffert, and Chloe Johnson as well as a Saxophone feature including Ava Dzubinski and Jaiden Waterloo. It’s a jazzy upbeat tune that looks as cool as it sounds.“Ho Hey” by The Lumineers is a direct transition into the song “Hey Baby” which then leads to “Hey Ya” by Outkast featuring the flags and majorettes joining together in the center of the band to “shake it like a polaroid picture” to a captivating high energy dance. The show stopping conclusion of “Hey Jude” by The Beatles features a solo by Hannah Reynolds and Liam Cunningham (both trumpets) as well as Jill Miller’s Baritone solo. I’d like to highlight that the seniors of the flag line choreographed this routine entirely on their own, without any assistance from the coaches.
This show is a medley of songs that include the lyric “hey.” This is the second halftime show we perform. We are special and lucky to be able to do this. Other schools only have one show a year. How can we do this? Because of time and effort. Very noticeably our band marches by “high step” rather than the more common “roll step.” This is pretty challenging at times, but so rewarding when the final product looks so cool. To even reach the final product we have two “band camps,” other schools only have what we call “pre-band camp” which is six days of six hour practice. Our second band camp is then spent at Camp Kon O’Kwee (a sleepaway camp). One whole week dedicated to finding out how to be a band. We spend seven days doing three three hour practices. The preseason totals to 93 hours. We are able to do the things we do because of the collective effort of the people and our amazing dedicated staff.
The North Hills Marching Band continues to impress people by their sound and look. The energy, precision, and enthusiasm set our band apart from others.
