A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson is the perfect fall read. This book follows the story of Pippa Fiz-Amobi, a senior in highschool working on her final project. For said project, she chooses to explore the murder case of Andie Bell and Sal Singh. It was believed that Sal, Andie’s boyfriend, murdered her and then killed himself. Pip however does not believe this. She meets Sal’s younger brother Ravi and with his help, uncovers the truth behind the murder. Pip ends up following many leads and meets many interesting people, but she ends up putting herself in some serious danger.
This book is a young adult fictional mystery with some romance. It is an intense read. Pippa explores many themes that almost every highschool student has experienced. Whether it is going through issues with her friends or societal issues, Jackson explores these all with compelling storytelling. The way she truly immerses the reader in Pip’s emotions is truly captivating, and the exploration of emotions throughout Pip’s grief and fear is something almost everyone can relate to. The story is well paced, and something is always happening. It is sure to keep the reader interested. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and make you never want to put it down. One second, you will be screaming when you realize the truth and the next you will be gasping when you realize it was all a lie.
Even if you do not like mystery, the romance in this book will interest you. The slow burn of Pip and Ravi will have you begging for them to finally get together. Pip struggles with her need to be the best, know everything, and stay safe. As she puts herself in harm’s way over and over again, your care for her will grow more and more. By the end of this book I felt myself truly caring for Pip and her emotions. She goes through many tough times and her family, who is not very supportive of this project, is little to no help. People can really learn from Pip’s ability to do things on her own and be her own leader.
From the moment I started reading this, I was captivated and was unable to put it down. I have read this book at least a dozen times now and would recommend it to anyone, especially those who like mysteries. This is one of my favorite books ever and one of the best fall reads.
