Body shaming has become one of the biggest issues during this extremely social media based society. Body positivity is hard to gain because of the hate surrounding body types. It is one of the most effective ways of bullying. There are several stereotypes that are typically unrealistic when it comes to the ideal “body type” specifically for women, but not excluding men. It all comes down to treating others the way you want to be treated.
Social media is an easy way to bully someone behind a screen. A lot of people resort to bullying online because there usually aren’t consequences although that is slowly changing due to police and easy ways to track what people do online. People tend to screenshot, repost, or send images in group chats. This can also include simple words of harassment.
Even celebrities are affected so extremely by the impacts of social media. Ariana Grande has experienced many hateful comments even saying she has an eating disorder. Billie Eillish experienced backlash when she wore tight clothing revealing her figure. She even stated in an interview that she wore baggy clothes to feel comfortable in her skin. Scarlett Johansson experienced inappropriate comments about her body due to her role as Black Widow. Mentioning how “tight” her costume is. She expressed during the interview that it was inappropriate to say during the interview. With celebrities being open about their struggles, it appears more relevant to highschool students now.
Being comfortable in your own skin is very important. It took years for me to learn that for myself and it’s okay if it’s a process to gain that feeling. When you’re comfortable with your body, you’re happier and healthier. High School students struggle with many things, body positivity being one of them.
Some famous TikTok influencers, such as Spencer Barbosa, radiate body positivity and demonstrate what it’s like to be comfortable with the way your body looks. She also shows the natural parts of a woman’s body such as body hair, stretch marks, and acne.
Ending with things you can do to keep a positive attitude and appreciate everything about yourself!
Going for walks/runs during the day gives you a chance to appreciate the outdoors and have some alone time. Having long showers/baths to take the time to wind down. Doing skincare/makeup to feel gorgeous in your own skin! Finding positive habits can greatly increase your body positivity and happiness within yourself. Your body is your home, so treat it with as much respect as humanly possible!
