North Hills High School Choir Presents 12th Annual Cabaret Night

Gabrielle Thinnes, Staff Writer

On Friday, March 3, 2023, North Hills High School Choir will host the 12th annual Cabaret Night. This annual event will take place in the high school cafeteria, with doors opening at 6:15 pm. Admission costs $5 with refreshments included, student performances will begin promptly at 7:00 pm.

For this event, the high school cafeteria will be transformed into a coffee shop with a casual atmosphere that would put anyone in the mood to listen to some good tunes. Any choir student was eligible to audition, with most making the set list. The environment of Cabaret Night is an “open mic night,” so any song performed is selected by the student(s) performing. With this being the case, the choir is proud that this night hosts so many different musical styles. Sophomore and performer Maddie Thinnes adds that “students can choose to perform as a solo, duet, or small group”. Singers may be accompanied by tracks, keyboards, or guitars. Some may even choose to perform a cappella style.

According to senior Bryan Karpinski, “Cabaret Night is one of the largest fundraisers for the Choral Parents Association.” All money made from this event will be put towards the choir’s trip to Messiah University and New York City this spring. In April, the choir will participate in the high school music department’s performance tour. Students who participate will travel to Messiah University to participate in specific workshops for their area of music. They will then travel to New York City, where students will even have the opportunity to see a Broadway show.

Beginning in 2012, this event has been one of the choir’s biggest fundraisers. Most of the past Cabaret Nights have been recorded and are posted to the choir’s YouTube channel. This year’s event will only be the second in person since the COVID-19 pandemic. Two years ago, in 2021, Cabaret Night was held virtually. Last year students were ecstatic to be hosting this event in person once again, but with a scaled back version. This year’s Cabaret Night will be the first fully back, with all of the amenities and activities returning this year.
