The Year of Women
January 9, 2018
If you are a human being who lived in 2017, you are aware of the obscenities that were unearthed regarding sexual assault. Big Hollywood names such as Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein were rightfully dragged through the presses. While plenty of men were coming forward and admitting to their actions, 2017 was also a year of women beginning to come forward and speak out against sexual assault. The #metoo movement was and is still huge, but in 2017, many are calling for a new beginning.
At the Golden Globes this past Sunday, women chose to stand in solidarity against sexual harassment in the entertainment industry by wearing all black, and come men wore pins to show their support. Though some may say this is not actually helping anything, it is starting a conversation and making a point. Men and women across the country and even the world began talking about the choices made at the golden globes. Many stand in support of the women showing their unrest.
In addition to showing solidarity, many women are speaking out. Oprah delivered a powerful and meaningful speech against sexual harassment: “And for too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up. Their time is up… So I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say, ‘Me too’ again.” This was only a portion of her magnificent speech which received well deserved praise from the audience.
Now it is circulating the internet that Oprah should run for president in 2020. Many believe she would be a much better president than the man who is currently running this country. It only takes a quick “op” in the google search bar to see people are discussing it. While she has stated in the past that she holds no interest in running for political office, her speech got many thinking that her views may be shifting. It has been said by two of Oprah’s close friends that she could be thinking about running. If she were to run, and get so far as to be in the final two, she would be only the second woman to make it to the final rounds and certainly the first black woman. The United States seems ready for a change, and if not ready, it certainly needs one. We the people are calling for an upheaval of corruption and the instatement a well fit replacement. This year is the year of women.
