Top 10 Horror Novels

Leah Peluso, Opinions

Even though Halloween is over, who wouldn’t love to curl up with a good horror book and a pumpkin spice latte by the burning fire? In no particular order, these 10 books (that might keep you up all night) made my list because of how thrilling, suspenseful, and well-written they are.

1.) The Shining by Stephen King- Published in 1977, this book is about a man who takes care of the Overlook Hotel. His son has a special gift that allows him to see the bloody past of the hotel. As the father is already considerably mentally unstable, the hotel makes him go insane. Will his wife and kids survive in a hotel alone with him?

2.) American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis- This story revolves around the very “psycho” narrator Patrick Bateman. By day, he is an investment banker but is a killer at night. He decides to kill his co-worker, Paul, which leads to a killing spree in his apartment. However, he begins to have hallucinations that result in him murdering many people in public.

3.) Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons- This book is amazing for all the sci-fi lovers out there as it is combined with horror in this heart-stopping read. It focuses on a small group who have the psychic ability to control people to do any physical action they want, including kill people.

4.) Salem’s Lot by Stephen King- This book focuses on a writer from Maine called Ben Mears, who is returning to his childhood home in Jerusalem’s Lot. He is working on a story about the allegedly haunted Manston House. As he is writing the story, a strange bald man tries to buy the house and turns the town into a living hell of demons and vampires.

5.) I Am Legend by Richard Matheson- I Am Legend is a story about a man named Robert Neville who is the only survivor of a vampire outbreak. He dedicates his life to finding out what disease caused the extinction of humanity.

6.) Misery by Stephen King (again)- This novel is about Paul Sheldon, a famous writer. One day, he gets into a car accident and is rescued by a very dedicated fan. She holds him hostage inside of her house and forces him to write a new ending of his latest book.

7.) The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris- This book is a sequel to Red Dragon, both about cannibal and serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter. He is pursued by an FBI agent named Clarice Starling.

8.) The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum-  Based on the real-life murder of Sylvia Likens, this novel follows two girls who are being cared for by their aunt. Her aunt is very abusive and so are her children, which the girls have to deal with on a daily basis. As it gets worse, the abuse eventually escalates into cold-blooded murder.

9.) Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin- This book is about a woman named Rosemary, and her husband, Guy, who move into New York City to start a new life. The apartment they moved into has some weird neighbors, but they decide to ignore them. The couple soon wants to start a family until they realize their neighbors are in a Satanic cult and want to steal their baby.

10.) The Terror by Dan Simmons- This fiction novel is based on the actual account of Captain Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror to the Arctic in the mid-1800s. Captain Franklin and his crew are stalked by a monster, and this book has actual names of his crew members who disappeared mysteriously on this voyage to force the Northwest Passage.
