September 29, 2016
The North Hills Inline hockey season is right around the corner! The teams had their first preseason games last weekend and have another four games next weekend. They have their next set of games next Saturday at Hot Shots Indoor Sports Center in Mount Pleasant.
Cam McCallum, the captain of the team, explains what he is looking forward to most this year, “I want to teach the younger guys as much as humanly possible before I leave.” He goes on to talk about his favorite hockey memory, he states, “playing my first year and my last year in front of the same goalie, Alec Volz.” Senior forward Blake Mawhinny answered to the same questions, “At the end of each practice, we do a shootout to see who gets the Hawaiian stinky shirt, the player who doesn’t score on the goalie has to wear this shirt to the next game and to the next practice.” Blake continues on, “This brings the team closer together and that can only make us play better on the rink.”
The High School II Team started off fast with a 3-1 record in their first set of games. The team is looking really strong this year. After coming off a High School II championship last year, the team looks to repeat back to back years. The team lost 6 players from last year’s team but there is lots of excitement around this year’s team. Led by senior defenseman Cam McCallum and senior forward Blake Mawhinny, they will lead this year’s team.
Cam scored at a rapid pace last year while playing in 22 games and having 23 goals and 11 assists for a total of 34 points. Blake Mawhinny followed as the enforcer of the team ending the season with 48 penalty minutes in only 22 games.
Freshman Patrick Megahan, Juniors Riley O’Neil, Sam Kowalski, Logan Bretsnyder, Brett Mawhinny, and Nate Bonsman are a new group of guys that have come from other teams. The team is coached by Don McCallum, Kyle McCallum, and Mike Bonsmann.
